Gran Canaria is a land of volcanoes. Its geological origin has shaped spectacular landscapes that are not easily repeated elsewhere. But the most surprising thing is that one of the most impressive volcanic scenarios of the island is just a few minutes from Domaine du Marquis: the impressive Bandama Caldera.
If you are looking for a different route, with history, good views and a touch of adventure, keep reading.

The Bandama Caldera is located in the interior of Gran Canaria, right on the border of three municipalities: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Telde and Santa Brígida.
This is a large volcanic depression about 200 meters deep, formed by ancient eruptions which shaped the current relief of the island. Today the volcano is completely inactive, so it is completely safe to visit it.
The name “Bandama” comes from the Flemish merchant Daniel Van Damme, who in the 16th century purchased land in the area to dedicate it to grape cultivation. In fact, this area is closely linked to the island's winemaking tradition.
Nearby is also the historic Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas, considered the oldest golf club in Spain, which adds a curious contrast between volcanic nature and perfectly maintained green landscape.
A crater with history in the heart of the island
In Bandama, you'll find two main options, depending on your level and the type of experience you're looking for.
1 ️ Circular path along the edge of the crater (easy route)
It is a route of approximately 3 kilometers that runs along the upper perimeter of the boiler. The path is comfortable and does not present major difficulties, making it ideal for doing with family or friends.
In less than an hour you can complete the tour while enjoying breathtaking views inside the crater. Along the path, it is common to see plant species characteristic of the environment, such as tajinastes and eucalyptus, as well as traditional buildings with a lot of history, such as the popular Casa de Agustinito.
It's a perfect option if you want to enjoy the landscape without great physical demands.
2 ️ № Route inside the boiler (middle level)
If you like the mountains and are looking for something more challenging, the descent into the crater is the most complete experience.
The entire route is around 6 kilometers long and has sections with steep slopes that can exceed 18%. The terrain is more technical and the path, at some points, is somewhat narrow. Depending on the pace, it can take 3 to 4 hours to complete it.
The reward is worth the effort: walking along the bottom of the crater, surrounded by volcanic walls, is a difficult feeling to describe. In the lower part you will find the pond known as El Culatón, one of the most unique corners of the route.
After the hike, you can go to Bandama Peak, where you can find one of the most spectacular viewpoints on the island. From there, the views cover the summit, the coast and municipalities such as Telde, Santa Brígida and even the capital.
It's the perfect brooch for a day of hiking.
The visit can be completed by exploring the surroundings. The area is dotted with small wineries and restaurants where you can sample local wines and Canarian cuisine. It's no coincidence: this area has been linked to grapevine cultivation for centuries.
Bandama isn't just a volcanic landscape. It's history, it's agricultural tradition and it's one of the places where the geological origin of Gran Canaria is best understood.
Best of all, it's just a few minutes away from Domaine du Marquis.
